SUMMER IMMERSION PROGRAM
IN COSTA RICA FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
July 16-25 OR July 16- Aug 1

  • Spanish classes at the CRLA in small groups for 3 hours daily, Mon-Fri-maximum of 6 students per class. Nine levels of Spanish offered. Students are placed with students of similar ages.
  • Additional two hours daily cultural workshops in Salsa dancing, Costa Rica cuisine, conversation, music, etc.
  • All books and materials
  • Night-time activities including a welcome dinner, movie night, roller skating and/or bowling
  • Homestay with Costa Rican families in a private room. Usually two students are placed in each homestay unless otherwise requested.
  • Laundry service
  • Internet access at the school
  • One international phone card
  • Breakfast and dinner daily with families.
  • Bilingual chaperone from Innovative Immersion Tour Programs in the U.S. who is with the group on all activities. Innovative Immersion Tours has ten years experience in leading student groups.
  • Fully escorted field trips to exciting destinations, including: the rainforest aerial tram, a butterfly farm, a scarlet macaw breeding program and animal refuge, Café Britt coffee factory, the national museum, Cartago Basilica and Lankester Botanical Gardens, Poas Volcano and national park, etc.
  • Weekend excursions: overnight to Punta Leona Beach and overnight to Arenal Volcano and Tabacon Hot Springs. Trips include private transportation, all activities, most meals and hotel stay.

SAMPLE ITINERARY: for 10-day or 17-day programs

DAY 1: Arrive into San Jose! Students will be met by a member of the school who will transfer them by private taxi to the homestay.

DAY 2: CATAMARAN CRUISE TO ISLA TORTUGA. This all-day tour will take us to board our catamaran on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. We will cruise to a private island and have a bbq there. Option to snorkel, kayak, hike, etc. Or just relax and soak up the sun. Return to San Jose in the evening to have dinner with families.

DAY 3: FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL! The families will take students to school today. We will have an orientation and placement test before lunch. CLASSES FROM 1PM TO 4PM. SALSA DANCE CLASS FROM 4PM TO 5PM. Return to the families by private bus at 6pm for dinner.

DAY 4: BUTTERFLY FARM: Pick-ups begin at 7am. This tour visits a butterfly garden with a tour of the site and an explanation of the life of a butterfly. Return to San Jose for lunch. SCHOOL IN THE AFTERNOON FROM 1PM TO 4PM. SALSA & CONVERSATION CLASSES FROM 4PM TO 6PM. Return to the families by private bus at 6pm for dinner.

DAY 5: FREE MORNING. We will begin pick ups at 10am to go to the mall to change money, use the internet, etc. CLASS FROM 1 TO 4PM. SALSA & COOKING FROM 4PM TO 6PM.

WELCOME DINNER AT 6PM. We will leave from the school for the restaurant that overlooks the city lights. Dinner is a large buffet of typical foods. The show will last 1 ½ hours and there is an opportunity to dance with folkloric dancers. We will drop students off at homes at 10:30pm.

DAY 6: CAFÉ BRITT COFFEE FACTORY TOUR: Pick-ups begin at 7am. This award-winning musical tour explains the importance of coffee in the region in a musical show. Return to San Jose after lunch. CLASS FROM 1 TO 4PM, FOLLOWED BY DANCING AND MUSIC CLASSES UNTIL 6PM. Then we will head to the mall for a movie in Spanish. Return to the families by private bus at 8pm.

DAY 7: CARTAGO CHURCH AND LANKESTER GARDENS. We will go to the former capital of San Jose, home to the most important church in the country, La Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles. We will have a guided tour there before heading to Lankester Gardens, home to over 800 species of orchids. We will be back in time for lunch. A short graduation ceremony takes place at 12. CLASS FROM 1PM TO 5PM, FOLLOWED BY SALSA DANCING. Drop offs begin at 5pm.

DAY 8: ARENAL VOLCANO, FORTUNA WATERFALL AND TABACON HOT SPRINGS: Pick ups begin at 8am. We will arrive at La Fortuna town around 1pm. There will be with one stop along the way to use the restrooms, purchase some snacks or take pictures of the beautiful scenery of the cloud forest. All expenses included. After checking into the hotel (in triple rooms), we will spend time at the hot springs and have dinner there. It is often possible to see the active Arenal Volcano from here.

DAY 9: ARENAL. Today we will visit the Fortuna Waterfall after breakfast. We will take a 1 hour horseback ride to the top of the falls and then hike down for about 15 minutes. Here it is possible to swim or just enjoy the scenery. Then we will return to the hotel for checkout and lunch. Then we will head back to San Jose in time for dinner with families.

DAY 10: FREE MORNING TO SLEEP IN, DO HOMEWORK, ETC. Pick ups begin at 11am. CLASS FROM 1PM TO 4PM, FOLLOWED BY TWO HOURS OF SALSA DANCING. Drop offs begin at 8pm after time at the mall or roller skating.

(THOSE WHO ARE DOING THE 10-DAY PROGRAM WILL BE TAKEN TO THE AIRPORT FOR THE TRIP HOME)

DAY 11: CHILDREN’S MUSEUM & SHOPPING IN THE MORNING: Pick ups begin at 9am. CLASS FROM 1PM TO 4PM, FOLLOWED BY SALSA DANCING AT 4PM AND MUSIC AT 5PM.

DAY 12: AMIGOS DE LAS AVES. Today we will begin pick ups at 7:30am and have a 45 minute drive to a scarlet macaw breeding program and bird refuge where we will see the various species of birds that are native to the area. We will have lunch & return to San Jose. CLASS FROM 1-4PM, FOLLOWED BY SALSA DANCING at 4pm AND COOKING CLASS AT 5PM. We will go to the movies tonight at the mall. Bus will begin drop offs at 8pm.

DAY 13: RAINFOREST AERIAL TRAM: Pick-ups begin at 7am. This tour visits the lush Braulio Carrillo National Park, located about one hour outside of San Jose. Naturalist guides take visitors on tram rides high above the rainforest to explain the canopy and on a walk to see local flora and fauna, such as orchids and leaf-cutter ants. We will return to San Jose for lunch. CLASS FROM 1 TO 4PM. SALSA DANCING AT 4PM AND CONVERSATION HOUR AT 5PM.

DAY 14: FREE MORNING. Students will use this time to get organized for the weekend and pack. We will begin pick ups at 10:30am in time to change money, use the internet, have lunch, etc. Our graduation ceremony at the school will take place at 12pm. CLASS FROM 1PM TO 4PM, FOLLOWED BY SALSA AND CONVERSATION HOUR. We will go bowling tonight to celebrate the end of classes. Drop offs at the homes begin at 8pm.

DAY 15: PACIFIC BEACH WEEKEND Today we will begin pick ups at 7:30am and have 2 hour drive to the Punta Leona Beach Hotel, located on the Pacific coast. There we will have the opportunity to swim in the ocean or at our hotel pool. In the afternoon we will have free time to use the pool. Lunch is on your own. Be ready at 6pm to go to dinner (included.)

DAY 16: We will have breakfast at the hotel and then go to the beach or use the pool. By noon we will leave for San Jose and stop along the way at We can also have lunch here so bring money. Return to San Jose for dinner with family.

DAY 17: RETURN HOME. We will pick each student up at their homestays to transfer to the airport.

NOT INCLUDED:
