Salamanca is located about two hours from the capital of Madrid. UNESCO named it “the Guardian Angel of Humanity” in 1988 because of its impressive variety of monuments and churches. It is nicknamed “La Dorada” (the golden city) because, over the centuries, the sandstone buildings that make up the city have gained a golden glow. Salamanca offers the visitor fascinating architecture, a historic cathedral, arguably the most beautiful plaza in Spain and charming cobblestone streets filled with sidewalk cafes and shops.
The University of Salamanca is one of the most impressive structures in the city. Founded in 1218, it is one of the oldest universities in Europe.
